📋 Know Before You Go
🎒 Packing Essentials
- Reef-safe sunscreen – Protects coral reefs. Look for Raw Elements, Stream2Sea, Badger, or Thrive. Non-reef-safe sunscreen kills coral.
- Snorkel gear – Worth buying before you arrive. Rental gear at beaches doesn't always fit well, and fins make a huge difference—you'll cover more distance with less effort. You can get a mask, snorkel, fins bundle for under $50 USD.
- Water shoes – Many beaches have rocky coral entries. These make a big difference.
- Bug spray – Mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, especially near water.
- Brimmed hat – The sun is strong year-round. Essential for beach days and outdoor activities.
- Reusable water bottle – Tap water is safe to drink.
- Waterproof phone case – Useful for marine life photos and keeping your phone safe at the beach. An inexpensive lanyard-style pouch works fine.
- Adapters – Blue Tide has 220V European-style outlets (Type F). Most modern electronics (phones, laptops) are dual-voltage and will work fine. We have two US-to-EU adapters available, but bring your own if you have multiple US devices.
- Snorkeling extras – Consider bringing drops for your mask if it fogs easily. Consider a rash vest to protect your back while you lose track of time exploring marine life.
💰 Money & Currency
- Currency: Caribbean guilder (XCG), introduced March 31, 2025. Pegged to USD at 1.79:1 (same as the old Netherlands Antillean guilder it replaced).
- USD accepted: Most places accept USD. But if you pay in cash, you'll get change in guilders.
- Credit cards & Apple Pay: Accepted nearly everywhere. The cashier usually asks if you want to pay with your card in USD or guilders.
- ATMs: Hard to find in Westpunt (nearest are 15-20 minutes toward Willemstad). Withdraw guilders if you need cash. Since card readers rely on service that is not consistently available, it's a good idea to take out some guilders at the airport and keep them handy in case needed.
- Tipping: Service charge (10-15%) is usually included in your bill. Check before adding extra.
🚗 Driving in Curaçao
- Drive on the right – Same as the US.
- Speed limits – Rarely posted. Typically 80 km/h (50 mph) on highways, 40-60 km/h (25-37 mph) through towns. Slow down in villages.
- Rental car essential – Public transport is limited and taxis are costly. Support local companies like Blue Lobster or Dushi rather than global chains. Book ahead during peak season.
- Rental car essential – Public transport is limited and taxis are costly. Support local companies like Blue Lobster or Dushi rather than global chains. Book ahead during peak season.
- Watch for iguanas – They cross roads without looking. Common in rural areas.
🌤️ Weather & Climate
- Year-round temperature: 78-88°F (26-31°C). Water stays warm regardless of season.
- Rain: Weather apps show daily rain icons—ignore them. Curaçao is arid. Most "showers" are 5-minute tropical bursts, often overnight. Rarely impacts plans.
- Rainy season: October-January sees slightly more rain, mostly at night or early morning. Days are still sunny.
- Outside hurricane belt: Unlike most of the Caribbean, Curaçao is virtually never affected by hurricanes. Plan fall/summer trips without storm concerns.
- Trade winds: Constant easterly breeze keeps it comfortable. Paradoxically, when hurricanes pass to the north, Curaçao can experience calmer winds and hotter temperatures.
💬 Language
Official languages: Dutch and Papiamentu
English: Widely spoken in tourist areas and by younger generations
Spanish: Commonly understood—many locals speak Spanish from exposure to Venezuelan and Colombian TV and radio
Useful Papiamentu phrases:
- Bon dia (bon DEE-ah) – Good morning
- Bon tardi (bon TAR-dee) – Good afternoon
- Bon nochi (bon NO-chee) – Good evening/night
- Danki (DAN-kee) – Thank you
- Con ta bai? (kon ta BYE) – How are you?
- Mi ta bon (mee ta BON) – I'm good
🛡️ Safety
- Overall: Curaçao is very safe. Use common sense as you would anywhere.
- Ocean safety: Be mindful of currents when swimming beyond sheltered coves. Use the buddy system when snorkeling.
- Wildlife: Iguanas are harmless—but don't feed them. Don't approach wild pigs if you see them at beaches. Leave marine life undisturbed. Watch for goats, donkeys, and deer on roads, especially at night.
- Vehicle safety: Don't leave valuables in your car at beaches. Many locals leave doors unlocked to show there's nothing inside.
- Drinking water: Tap water is distilled seawater and excellent to drink—no need to buy bottled water.
